Je suis très heureuse que mon Absolu fasse partie de l’exposition de groupe Confluences, une exposition des membres de BRAVO-Est, à la galerie d’art d’Ottawa.
I am very happy that my Absolu is part of the group exhibition Confluences, une exposition des membres de BRAVO-Est, at the Ottawa Art Gallery.
Le mot Confluences évoque le lieu de rencontre de plusieurs rivières, là où, dans la force du courant, peut-être dans l’émergence ou l’aboutissement d’un lac, les énergies créatrices se rencontrent et s’amplifient. Le débit des eaux engendre la puissance. Chaque goutte d’eau contribue au tout. Au coeur de chaque oeuvre et en arrière-plan de chaque démarche d’artiste, se cachent une grande sensibilité et une volonté de changer le monde (RÊVE et (RE)PRÉSENTATION), des aspirations profondes, environnementales, territoriales, générationnelles, identitaires (APPARTENANCE), des quêtes spirituelles (LUMIÈRE) – à ce propos, je suis frappée par le grand nombre d’artistes qui sepréoccupent de guérir la terre et tout ce qu’elle porte de vivant, ou encore par ceux, celles qui trouvent dans l’art le refuge ultime, peut-être après avoir subi les égratignures qui leur ont été infligées et qui, grâce aux gestes méditatifs pertinents des créateurs peuvent reconstruire leur moi.
Les artistes se font aussi évocateurs, imaginent des métaphores, posent des charades (MÉTAPHORE, INVOCATION), ou bien, ils manoeuvrent pour mettre en relief ce qui les préoccupe (ACTIONS et STRATÉGIES), à moins d’opter pour l’attaque des matériaux avec comme atout la complicité des formes et des couleurs pour s’exprimer et représenter leurs émotions (STRUCTURE, COULEUR, MATÉRIALITÉ). Les oeuvres touchent de temps à autre aux grandes questions philosophiques « D’où venons-nous ? Où allons-nous ? Qui sommes-nous ? », des interrogations bien fondées, à entendre comme réflexion spirituelle tout comme littérale, chez un people formé du brassage continuel et des va-et-vient de sa population.
Loin d’être une compilation exhaustive de ce qui s’est produit en art visuel en Ontario francophone au cours des dernières décennies, Confluences témoigne avec vigueur de certaines facettes et de l’étendue de la créativité des artistes qui ont répondu à l’appel de BRAVO. Confluences nous présente donc le registre partiel d’un très vaste panorama artistique qui débute avec, d’une part, les créations en terre cuite de Maurice Gaudreault (1932-2000) et, d’autre part, l’oeuvre peinte de Clément Bérini (1930-1996). Ces deux artistes précurseurs montrent deux voies séparées, le premier observe le monde extérieur et les menus détails de la vie quotidienne et, ce faisant, façonne la matière en réalisant un registre tangible témoin d’un temps révolu, tandis que le second s’intéresse à l’effet de la Lumière en nous, en déconstruisant, en ré-agençant les formes et les couleurs pour les renvoyer vers notre âme. L’oeuvre de Gaudreault et celle de Bérini, chacune avec son approche diamétralement opposée dans l’intention et la production, informent l’héritage artistique des artistes présentés dans Confluences.

The word Confluences evokes the meeting place of several rivers, where, amid the intense current, perhaps in the emergence or culmination of a lake, creative energies meet and amplify each other. Flowing water generates power. Each drop contributes to the whole. At the heart of each work, and in the background of each approach, there is great sensitivity and a will to change the world (DREAM and [RE] PRESENTATION), deep environmental, territorial, generational, identity-based aspirations (BELONGING), and spiritual quests (LIGHT)—in this regard, I am struck by how many artists are concerned with healing the earth and all that is alive in it, or by those who find in art the ultimate refuge, perhaps after having suffered bumps and bruises inflicted upon them, and who, thanks to the relevant meditative gestures of creation, can rebuild themselves. The artists also become evocative, imagining metaphors and asking riddles (METAPHOR, INVOCATION), they carefully plan to highlight what preoccupies them (ACTIONS and STRATEGIES), or they choose to harness the power of forms, colours and materials to express themselves and represent their emotions (STRUCTURE, COLOUR, MATERIALITY). From time to time, the works touch on great philosophical questions—“Where do we come from? Where are we going? Who are we?”—, well-founded questions all, intended as spiritual and literal reflections from a people formed by the continual mixing, coming and going of its population.
Far from being an exhaustive compilation of what has been produced in the visual arts in French-speaking Ontario over the last few decades, Confluences is a powerful testament to certain aspects and to the extent of the creativity of the artists who have responded to BRAVO’s call. Confluences showcases a glimpse into a vast landscape of artistic production that begins with Maurice Gaudreault’s (1932–2000) clay creations and Clément Bérini’s (1930–1996) painted oeuvre. These two pioneering artists show two separate paths: the first observes the outside world and the minutiae of daily life and, in so doing, shapes material into a tangible record of a bygone era; the second is interested in the effect that Light has on us, deconstructing and rearranging forms and colours and sending them back to our soul. Gaudreault’s and Bérini’s work, each with diametrically opposed approaches to intention and production, inform the artistic legacy of the artists presented in Confluences.

Causerie d’artiste interconneXion - Huit artistes - Un rouleau compresseur - Laurence Finet Samedi 12 juin 2021 à 14h - Galerie de l’École en Pierre, Portage-du-Fort, Québec
Sous l’égide d’artPontiac et avec le soutien du Conseil des arts du Québec, le projet InterconneXion a rassemblé sept graveurs et un vidéographe. Ces artistes ont exploré les liens qui les relient à leur communauté, leur environnement, et aussi entre eux et avec le public. Lors de cette causerie, je vous raconterai l’histoire de ce projet de sa naissance à son aboutissement, le jour de l’impression des estampes sous rouleau compresseur dans les rues de Shawville en été 2020 jusqu’à l’exposition de ces œuvres aujourd’hui. Chaque artiste a choisi d’interpréter ce thème selon sa pratique artistique, l’endroit où il vit et son expérience de vie.
« Toutes choses sont connectées » et je me suis inspirée de la connexion que les êtres humains ont entre eux et avec leur environnement. Cette interconnexion se matérialise dans le fluide – le sang, l’eau, la sève – qui relie les humains à la terre dont ils font partie.
Artist Talk interconneXion – Eight artists – One steamroller – Laurence Finet Saturday June 12 2021 2 PM - Stone School Gallery, Portage-du-Fort, Quebec
Under the umbrella of artPontiac and with the support of the Conseil des arts du Québec, the interconneXion project brought together seven printmakers and a videographer. These artists explored the connections to their community, their environment, and also the connections among themselves and with the public. In this talk, I will tell you the story of this project from its birth to its culmination, the day when we printed our large plates under a steamroller in the streets of Shawville in the summer of 2020 until today, at the exhibition of these artworks. Each artist chose to interpret this theme in ways that reflect their own art practices as well as the places where they live and their life experiences.
“All things are connected” and I drew inspiration from the connection human beings have with each other and with their environment. This interconnection materializes in the fluid –blood, water, sap- connecting humans to the land they are part of.
